Dynamics of direct spring operated pressure relief valve attached to pipeline: from Computational Fluid Dynamics to spreadsheet computation

The presentation focuses on the dynamical behaviour and stability of a 1 DoF oscillator (pressure relief valve) attached to an inlet pipeline and an upstream reservoir. After systematically simplifying the corresponding fluid mechanical equations we present a reduced order model (quarter-wave model) capable of capturing the core dynamics. By means of multiple timescale analysis, we present a criteria for stable valve operation. It is shown that the impact of the valve body with the seat gives rise to non-smooth grazing and impacting bifurcations. In particular, we present the two-parameter continuation of grazing periodic orbits embedded into Matlab environment.
