Mathematics A3 in English

For Civil Engineering Students

Fall, Academic Year 2011-2012

All official information will be posted on the course homepage http://www.math.bme.hu/~mogy/teaching/a3_english/ during the semester. Please visit that page often. The requirements of this course consist of the followings.

We will have a two-hour lecture and a two-hour exercise class each week. While visiting lectures is not mandatory (although strongly recommended), you are allowed to miss at most five (double) exercise classes.

There will also be a total of two midterm exams and a final exam. Midterms are written during the lectures of the 6-th and 12-th week. All exam times and locations can be found on the course homepage. For these, please bring with you

No other tools can be used on midterms and on the final exam. You need to observe instructions of the supervisors during the exams. No communication with your classmates or other persons are allowed, not even in the last minute of the exam. Anyone violating these rules will have his/her actual exam voided, and 15 points subtracted from his/her total score (see below).

You can earn 30 points on each of the two midterms. The graded papers can be viewed in the exercise class of the week that follows the date of a midterm exam. One of the two midterms can also be taken or re-taken during the 13-th week in a non-lecture time.Times and locations are also posted on the course homepage. If you take a midterm and you decide to take its make-up version as well, then we will consider the latest of the two scores, in other words it is possible to decrease your midterm score by handing in a weaker make-up midterm. You will need to earn at least 18 points combined out of a total 60 points on the two midterm exams. (There is, however, no minimum score on any particular midterm.)

A further make-up possibility will be available on the make-up week. This requires a make-up fee, and can only be taken by students whose results would not otherwise qualify them to take the final exam. At this time a two-session (90 minutes) exam is written on all the topics that have been covered during the semester. A student taking this exam will qualify if he/she earns at least 30% of the points on this exam. Regardless of this score, the minimal 18 points will be considered as total score for the midterms.

You will qualify to take the final exam if you

If you qualified to take the final exam in an earlier semester then you have two choices. Either

You can take the final exam at the end of the semester if you qualify to take it. A successful final (that is, grade 2 or better) requires

Your total score will be the sum of the scores earned by the two midterms and by the final. Grades will be computed according to the following chart:

125 - 150Excellent (5)
105 - 124Good (4)
90 - 104Satisfactory (3)
75 - 89Pass (2)
