Szálka, Gergely (MSCI)

The Past is the new Futurewhy does it feel that we are where we were 100 years ago.

Slightly provoking and simplifying model of American (anglo saxon) history where the cyclicality is established by the product of the interaction between preceding generations. In each cycle, saeculum, the rhythm of the generations are similar, building up momentum, destroying it and making place for something new.  The academic response to this approach is at least mixed (hence the interest); however creating a model that can guide our thinking on a 100 year horizon is not something we can leave on the table. The idea has very engaged followers similarly to Graeber, Jared Diamond or Harari. Like every model, this is a peculiar point of view, trying to look at one side of things, however it successfully put events like the financial crisis along with the issues around gen Z in a meaningful, deep historical context.
