Online
social network sites and how to
study them
We tend to live larger
and larger parts of our lives on
online social network
sites. It has thus become the gold
mine for sociologists and network scientists. I will discuss the life and death of the Hungarian
online social network site iWiW. I show that its collapse was
due to cascade
effects as people left the
sites when about 50% of their friends had become inactive. Furthermore I show that the information
one obtains from analysing the network structure
of the online social contacts can be very different from real ones
as these sites perform a nontrivial sampling of the society. In the end I will present a model of social networks and show what may cause
echo chambers in human society.
