MSc in (Applied) Mathematics final exams

Date

The next final exam period is July 6.–10., 2026.

The final exam period is usually the week following the last full week of the exam period.

Registration

You have to register in the Neptun system.
Please also fill the form Final exam (MSc) 2026 (Google form).

The thesis and abstract have to be uploaded to the Neptun system and also sent to zv@math.bme.hu. You need not to submit a hard copy.
The name of the thesis file should be [surname]_[given_name]_dipl.pdf while the name of the abstract is [surname]_[given_name]_diplkiv.pdf (one given name is enough).
For example, in the case of Harry Andrew Smith, the names of the files are smith_harry_dpl.pdf and smith_harry_dplkiv.pdf

Subjects of the final exam

You have to choose subjects which cover 23-25 credits. You will get two questions.
Detailed rules and the topisc of the subjects: MSc in Applied Mathematics and MSc in Mathematics.
Those who started before September 2024 can choose according to the old rules, or possibly in a mixed way if approved by the person responsible for the specialization.

Schedule

The schedule is usually finalized the week before the final exam.
Arrive at the exam at least 30 minutes earlier compared time slot of the schedule, so that you can get your exam questions and then you have time for prepare (30 minutes).

The course of the final exams

  1. Presentation of the thesis using slides (20 minutes) and answering questions from the reviewers and the committee.
  2. Present your answer at the blackboard for the questions. Here you need not present proofs (of course you may remember the main ideas, but it is not expected), what is important is to have a safe knowledge of basic notions, important theorems, connections between theorems, notions, implications, examples, counterexamples, applications of the theory, etc.
  3. The committee deliberates.
  4. The committee announces the results of the final exam.

Calculating results

The final examination committee decides on the following grades:

The final exam is successful if all grades are at least pass, otherwise the given exam part must be repeated in a later semester.

Then E=0,3·T+0,2·AGS+0,5·GPA, from which the qualification of the diploma is

passif 2.00 ≤ E ≤ 2.49;
satisfactoryif 2.50 ≤ E ≤ 3.49;
goodif 3.50 ≤ E ≤ 4.49;
excellentif 4.50 ≤ E ≤ 5.00;
excellent with distinctionif GPA is at least 4.25 and all grades received in the final exam are excellent.
