To mark the 50th anniversary of Roger Penrose's first steps toward the now world-famous Penrose tilings, we show that these tilings in turn have inspired scientific, geometric, and artistic imaginations. Specific examples include the 2011 Nobel prize in Chemistry, the notion of a stem cell of the solid state, and the "Bird's Nest" Olympic Stadium in Beijing.
