BSc in Mathematics final exams

Date

The next final exam period is July 6.–10., 2026.

The final exam period is usually the week following the last full week of the exam period. For those applying for MSc Program in the autumn final exam period, the final exam is in the first (possibly second) week of January.

Registration

You have to register in the Neptun system.
Please also fill the form Final exam (BSc) 2026 (Google form).

The thesis and abstract have to be uploaded to the Neptun system and also sent to zv@math.bme.hu. You need not to submit a hard copy.
The name of the thesis file should be [surname]_[given_name]_szd.pdf while the name of the abstract is [surname]_[given_name]_szdkiv.pdf (one given name is enough).
For example, in the case of Harry Andrew Smith, the names of the files are smith_harry_szd.pdf and smith_harry_szdkiv.pdf

Subjects of the final exam

You will get one question from one of the basic subjects: Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms or Probability, see Topics of the basic subjects.

The second question is from one of your chosen special subjects. You have to choose subjects that cover 12 credits or more from the following list:
Algebra 2 (4)
Applied Numerical Methods with Matlab (4)
Combinatorics and Graph Theory 2 (4)
Convex Geometry (4)
Functional Analysis 1 (4)
Introduction to Data Science 1 (4) exercises
Introduction to Quantum Information Theory (3)
Mathematical Logic (2)
Matrix Analysis (3)
Number Theory (2)
Operations Research (3)
Partial Differential Equations (4)
Physics 1 for Mathematicians (2)
Probability Theory 2 (4) exercises
Set Theory (2)
Stochastic Processes (6)
Tools of Modern Probability Theory (4)

Schedule

The schedule is usually finalized the week before the final exam.
Arrive at the exam at least 30 minutes earlier compared time slot of the schedule, so that you can get your exam questions and then you have time for prepare (30 minutes).
Schedule of the previus exams.

The course of the final exams

  1. Presentation of the thesis using slides (15 minutes) and answering questions from the reviewers and the committee.
  2. Present your answer at the blackboard for the questions you were given from the basic subjects and from one of your special subjects. Here you need not present proofs (of course you may remember the main ideas, but it is not expected), what is important is to have a safe knowledge of basic notions, important theorems, connections between theorems, notions, implications, examples, counterexamples, applications of the theory, etc. From the special subject you may get some questions of theory and some problems to solve as well.
  3. The admission interview if you have applied to BME for MSc in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.
  4. The committee deliberates.
  5. The committee announces the results of the final exam.

Calculating results

The final examination committee decides on the following grades:

The final exam is successful if all grades are at least pass, otherwise the given exam part must be repeated in a later semester.

Then E=0,3·T+0,2·AGS+0,5·GPA, from which the qualification of the diploma is

passif 2.00 ≤ E ≤ 2.49;
satisfactoryif 2.50 ≤ E ≤ 3.49;
goodif 3.50 ≤ E ≤ 4.49;
excellentif 4.50 ≤ E ≤ 5.00;
excellent with distinctionif GPA is at least 4.25 and all grades received in the final exam are excellent.
